The Ladies of Charity organization is a group of Catholic women who respond to the poor and needy.  The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) and the  LOC of Oakland County have worked closely for many years in various projects. The Ladies of Charity have been both a major donor and a partner over the years.  Some of them are also volunteers in the kitchen.

They have supported Matchan for 23 years through an annual Turkey

Drive at Thanksgiving and a Ham Drive at Easter time.  Over the years, they have assisted with the purchase of needed kitchen equipment and financial support. In 1989, LOC member Barbra King was instrumental in raising the money for new ovens and later she started the Thanksgiving Turkey Drive. In 2011, LOC member Kelly Monahan suggested they conduct a Ham Drive at Easter.

For the last 11 years, LOC member, Mary Ottney has carried on the tradition as Chairperson of the drives. Since then, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs (OLQM) Catholic Church in Beverly Hills has joined the Ladies in their turkey collection.  The turkeys are collected by Matchan on the Monday before Thanksgiving at OLQM.  12 to 15 turkeys are selected for the Thanksgiving Dinner at Matchan and the rest are stored for later use.

Preparations for Thanksgiving Day start early at Matchan, but more on that later.  Suffice it to say, the Ladies of Charity play an important role by their support. Throughout the years, the LOC have helped Matchan by purchasing tables, chairs, stock pots, steam table pans and other equipment that we needed.  They also have provided service projects like cooking lessons for our guests who came to the kitchen so they could prepare the fresh food they were given to take home.
